E Number website

I have been working on some of the e number pages alongside the holding page and intro to the website. I have decided to use flash as it allows the site to become more interactive, allowing the viewer to engage with elements of the pages, so as not to loose interest, on what is potentially, to some people, a boring subject.

E 913 (Evaluating)

The Sheeps Wool

I had managed to get some wool posted over from Keswick, little did i know most of the sheep are black. Before anyone decides to call me a 'sheepist' i though it would be more recognizable to people when in the white/dirty cream. Anyway i had the idea to photograph the wool from above. The one below is the most successful, this is the angle i will pursue, but with white/dirty cream wool.

After a couple of shots i realized the off-putting, shocking nature was not being communicated at this angle. It was only when you get up close that you understand firstly what it is and secondly how dirty/shitty the wool is. When getting close up you start to understand the nature of what is being presented, it has the negativity am after.

This has set me back, but it part of the testing process that i need to go through. The main points of focus need to be,

how does it fit within the context of a billboard?
will it arouse interest?
does it communicate dirty, mucky filth, shit?

Made a pigs ear of.......

I have been working on the e number posters again and it came to the turn of gelatin (E441), which derives from animal fat and bones.

I have continued with the script type as it shows how E numbers are disguised and almost glamorized within foods. There is something very eye catching and full of character when you do this. When produced to a large scale it overpowers the public and gets them to consider what is in their food. Potentially making them more aware of what they put in their mouth and considering their diet in-general.

Here are the results. I will be re-photographic so all the letters appear together. I though this could be achieves in Photoshop, however with these photos it began to loose the impact factor.

E Numbers: Looking for context

After reviewing yesterday the first thing i wanted to sort out was places in which the micro-site and the printed catalogue could fit. I decided my main target audience would be parents, apart from that it is difficult, especially with food to determine who would be interested in finding out what e number are and how they can affect you. Here are some of the potential contexts for the outcome,

Kids Health is an online resourse for parents to inform themselves about nutrition.

Website

Department of health, a government driven site.

Website

Another relevant one would also be the NHS.

If i am to produce a microsite then there needs to be something on the homepage of the site that will encourage people to click onto the link. This will act in the same way as the poster, however the scale is massively different. This could be something produced in flash to attract peoples attention.

Evaluation of E Numbers

This project is going to get much more attention now i have decided to put the hooligan project to rest. Some of the points i need to address are,

Context of what it is i am producing,
Who will i be speaking to,

I got a good response from the experimental type work i have been exploring, so these could be used as posters to support and direct my audience to the catalogue of e numbers. The eye catching nature will be the initial introduction to e-numbers i would potentially encourage further investigation. Again i need to decide where the audience will be interacted with. There could be potential environment features that could be used to drive this forward. This image below shows a potential way of doing this,

Subscript2

I have decided the deliverables need to be digital and print based. This allows me to inform a larger audience.

Research i need to carry out
The research i need to do now is within audience and context. Who is it and how can i reach them?

E904

I am again representing the e number by illustrating the type to mimic what it derives from. The shellac is a deposit of the female lac. It is used as a glazing agent. Can be found in your crunchie McFlurry. The images would be great as billboard posters. They are not there necessarily to put people off food, but to make them more aware of what is lurking in some products.

Click on image below to get a better view.

Below shows the progression, i wasn't sure how concentrated the lice should. I wanted the direction to be legible but still remain concentrated so it became un-nerving.

E is for addatives

So here we go. I went straight into looking at E-numbers. This brief will be about informing myself about what they are, where they're found, are they all bad. Then using this to inform people about this information.

The images below shows how i represented E120. The e number is drawn from Dactilopius coccus (Dactilopiidae) So it is not suitable for vegetarians.

Didn't get a too bad result from a red sock around a bed light on the kitchen work-top with a piece of white paper.

This book is great for referencing the E Numbers. It was a best seller in 1984. The brown pages smell great.
