Banners

A new direction is to study the language of the game. Chants and banners. Some of the banners are really well put together, others hand made. It seems from these below that the stronger ones have taken time to put the banners together. Others have hand drawn banners with less wit to them.

This one for liverpool has to be a favorite. It could be the age of the image from 1977 put the copy that related to previous wins in other countries is well written. The language is quite basic and picks up on stereotypes.

To the point!

Art D!rect!on

In recent years it has not been highly publicized in comparison to the hype of the 1980s which saw the likes of the 'crews' causing havoc at football matches. However by referencing online sources it definitely still is happening within the UK and abroad. My initial thought and art direction have concentrated on how i can communicate the relationship between the hooligan and the police figure.

To do this i came up with the thought of considering how swear words are cited within text. The first idea was to manipulate symbols to become more aggressive. Below is a couple of examples.

Below was part of an experiment in replacing symbols within text. It tests legibility but it gives the body copy the aggressive character it needs.

In these images the overpowering block letters have dominated the reserved piece of text. The inspiration was from one of the images below. The body copy could have its kerning increased to add to this.

These are some of the photos i have been working from.

Credit Crunch

I started to think about the issues of the credit crunch. It seems like the whole country is about crash and burn and turn into a nation that resembles a scene from Mad Max. Before people start wearing leather jackets and carrying weaponry then maybe way of dealing with the credit crunch is to make a typeface that smiles at people and is happy.

That when i came across this type face designed by Ramiro Espinoza, titled Tomate. Some of the stresses on the letters start to smile at you, especially the e. The shaping of the letters encourage produce a negative space, which separates the letters in a way that make them look like there having fun.
